Three Months

By Craig Whitley

[Verse 1]

Car seat crumbs and coffee lids

Cartoons humming on the phone

Her hand shaking in the front seat

Saying

“Drive

Just drive us home”

Fluorescent hallway

Plastic chair

Doctor’s eyes already wet

“Pancreas

It’s spread too far”

Three months spelled in a whisper I’ll never forget

[Chorus]

Three months turned to one

One month turned to days

Days turned into seconds

I was counting in a haze

You were learning how to leave

I was learning how to stay

Three months

One month

And I still feel that day

[Verse 2]

Paper cranes on the window rail

Nurse draws flowers on the chart

Our girl colors on the bedsheets

Our boy sleeps on my chest in the dark

You said

“Promise them the silly stuff

Burnt toast

Dance in the rain”

You kissed my hand like it was glass

Said

“Don’t you let them wear my name as a chain”

[Chorus]

Three months turned to one

One month turned to days

Days turned into seconds

I was begging time to break

You were fading into light

I was drowning in your face

Three months

One month

Sad memories I can’t erase

[Instrumental Interlude]

[Bridge]

Your toothbrush by the faucet

Your sweater on the chair

Tiny shoes lined by the door

Like you could still be there

I pour two mugs out of habit

Then drink one

Then just wait

Talk to air at the kitchen table

As if you’re only running late (oh)

[Chorus]

Three months turned to one

One month turned to days

Days turned into stories

That I tell them when they’re brave

You were here

You are here

In their laugh

In their names

Our love was endless

and forever remains

[symphonic tunes]

[Outro]

Fading petals falling down

My love my life my crown

Gone too soon gone too fast

My broken heart will always last.
