[violins, intro]
[verse 1]
Our last days of school went by far too fast,
Soon we became just another alumni class.
Our Senior Play was on a Friday night,
After graduation on Tuesday, our class took flight.
[verse 2]
Me off to college and some off to war,
Me nearby, but my buddies too far,
Taken by Uncle Sam for basic training,
Then off to Naam, dodging death and maiming.
[verse 3]
Their journey to manhood took just six weeks,
Marching, shooting, and training in creeks.
While I was studying and having fun,
They were fighting for freedom with a gun.
[chorus]
It didn’t seem right, and didn’t seem fair,
I knew in my heart I shoulda been there.
Staying by their side like I had in school.
Looking out for each other was our silent rule.
The roads we take in life change who we are,
Whether we’re near or whether we’re far.
So many times we make quick decisions,
Never considering outcomes and revisions.
[verse 4]
Some didn’t survive Naam, it still hurts to the core,
Others struggled for years, and even more,
Some flew back safely, but changed forever,
Others carry invisible wounds they’ll never sever.
[verse 5]
Fifty years have now passed us by,
Thinking of those not here, causes me to cry,
What I would give to see them one more time,
Let em know they’re still loved, in this heart of mine.
[verse 6]
Life in a small town makes friends forever,
Regardless our miles apart, our hearts still tied together.
Memories of our childhood, buried deep in our soul,
The place we remain young forever and never grow old.
[bridge]
Memories of our childhood, buried deep in our soul,
The place we remain young forever and never grow old.
