Steve at the Drive-In

[Verse 1]
It’s nineteen fifty-eight, the stars are out tonight,
Young Steve’s got his Chevy, polished up just right.
He’s got a date with Francis, his heart’s a nervous drum,
At the drive-in movie, where love might just come.
He’s got his Brylcreem hair, his jacket’s lookin’ fine,
But his palms are sweaty, he’s scared to cross that line.
He loves sweet Francis, but words just won’t take wing,
Afraid to steal a kiss, oh, what a scary thing!

[Chorus]
Oh, Steve at the drive-in, heart’s a-racin’ fast,
Wants to tell sweet Francis he’s hers to the last.
But she’s sittin’ there, thinkin’ he’s a bore,
Dreamin’ of older boys who’ve kissed and loved before.
She’s plannin’ to fake a cough, say, “Take me home, I’m done,”
But fate’s got other plans before this night is won.

[Verse 2]
Francis rolls her eyes, thinks, “What a clueless guy,
Steve’s no match for seniors who charm and don’t act shy.”
She’s bored with the movie, some flick about the stars,
Ready to play sick and ditch this date of ours.
But just as she’s rehearsin’ her “fever” and her frown,
Her best friend Peggy shows, with the coolest cat in town.
Scooter Hancock, quarterback, with swagger and a grin,
Asks, “Mind if we hop in your back seat, friend?”

[Chorus]
Oh, Steve at the drive-in, heart’s a-racin’ fast,
Wants to tell sweet Francis he’s hers to the last.
But she’s sittin’ there, thinkin’ he’s a bore,
Dreamin’ of older boys who’ve kissed and loved before.
Now Peggy and Scooter climb in, the car’s a rockin’ scene,
Windows foggin’ up, no one sees the silver screen.

[Bridge]
Scooter’s kissin’ Peggy, like they’re hitched and on their own,
The Chevy’s steamin’ up, it’s a teenage danger zone.
Francis feels the pressure, doesn’t wanna seem uncool,
Grabs poor Steve and plants one, breakin’ every rule.
Her lips are hot and heavy, Steve’s heart just skips a beat,
He’s so shocked by passion, he faints right in his seat!

[Verse 3]
The car goes dead silent, they think Steve’s met his end,
Francis screams, “I killed him!”—her heart can’t comprehend.
Peggy’s cryin’, Scooter’s shook, they’re sure he’s gone for good,
The drive-in’s in a panic, like a scene from Hollywood.
But Steve’s eyes flutter open, he’s alive, to their relief,
Francis, tears a-streamin’, says, “I caused you all this grief!”
She vows to make it right, says, “Let’s stay for the next show,”
And pulls him close for kissin’, just the two of them aglow.

[Chorus]
Oh, Steve at the drive-in, heart’s a-racin’ fast,
Finally got sweet Francis, his love’s no longer masked.
She’s not thinkin’ he’s a moron, not dreamin’ of those boys,
Now they’re foggin’ up the windows with their double-feature joys.
From a night of nervous jitters to a love that’s bold and true,
Steve and Francis found their spark, in that Chevy built for two.

[Outro]
So here’s to young love’s magic, at the drive-in’s neon glow,
Where Steve and Francis found their hearts, and let their feelings show.
In nineteen fifty-eight, with the stars and screen above,
A fainted kiss turned nervous Steve into Francis’ one true love.
