[Verse 1]

John Roderick Columbus Brown,
wore a straw hat for a crown.
The only king I’ve ever known,
ruled over a farm where melons were grown.

[Verse 2]

He was my grandpa, my mother’s daddy,
Waking me up daily — “Boy, are you ready?”
We’ve another day of fighting the heat,
Picking peas and beans in our bare feet.

[Chorus]

Folks on a farm have chores every day,
More time to work than time to play.
But the teaching moments shared by all,
Makes you proud and makes you tall.

[Verse 3]

He was my mentor, my Papa Brown,
With a mule named Jake he plowed the ground.
Wearing overalls and a flannel shirt,
Dipping snuff and working in the dirt.

[Verse 4]

Whether cutting hay or shucking corn,
Castrating steers, or watching animals born,
Life on the farm is a classroom session,
Every day it teaches you another new lesson.

[Chorus]

Folks on a farm have chores every day,
More time to work than time to play.
But the teaching moments shared by all,
Makes you proud and makes you tall.

[Verse 5]

Side by side we’d take two rows,
Chopping out weeds with garden hoes.
On and on the hard work went,
Not stopping until all energy was spent.

[Verse 6]

It was in those fields I learned about life,
Where he taught me how to treat a wife,
The moral compass he gave to me,
Still guides me today for all to see.

[Chorus]

Folks on a farm have chores every day,
More time to work than time to play.
But the teaching moments shared by all,
Makes you proud and makes you tall.
