[Verse 1]
I was born in a small town, back in ’69
Mama cried and Daddy smiled, said “That boy’s gonna shine”
Said my first word on a porch swing, in the warm July light
Didn’t know then, I’d be chasing dreams every mile of this ride
[Verse 2]
Tiny backpack, first day of school, Mama waved goodbye
Held back tears, stood up tall, I was scared but I tried
Made my first friend at recess, shared a PB&J
We swore we’d stick together come what may
[Verse 3]
Got my first bike at Christmas, with training wheels and pride
Took it down that gravel road and learned how to fly
First kiss was awkward, under bleachers in the fall
But my heart beat like a freight train — I still remember it all
[Verse 4]
Had my first date, felt ten feet tall
Whispered sweet nothings I barely knew at all
My first girl broke it off one June night
She said, “You’ll be fine,” and I swore she was right
[Chorus]
Oh, life rolls on like a Southern storm
Some days blaze hot, some leave you torn
From heartbreak nights to the love I’ve found
Every rise, every fall, every turnaround
Yeah, I’ve laughed, I’ve cried,
But I’d do it all again for every mile of this ride
[Verse 5]
Got my driver’s license, keys in hand
Cranked up Skynyrd, felt like a man
Graduated high school in boots and jeans
Had dreams bigger than my hometown scene
[Verse 6]
My first beer tasted bitter, but the night was sweet
In a ‘93 Chevy parked down by the creek
Got my first car with rust on the hood
Didn’t look like much, but she ran good
[Verse 7]
Cast my first vote and felt proud to stand
Then I packed my bags for college land
Wrote my mama from the dorm that night
Said, “I’m scared as hell, but I’ll be alright”
[Verse 8]
Then I stood in camo with boots on sand
First day in the service, salute in hand
Saw the world through a soldier’s eyes
Some boys came home… and some said goodbye
[Verse 9]
Walked the stage at college, cap in the breeze
Thought, “This is what Dad would’ve loved to see”
Got my first job in the energy world,
Traveled the world and took a whirl.
[Chorus]
Oh, life rolls on like a winding song
Some verses short, some way too long
Built with scars and the strength I found
Every yes, every no, every turnaround
Yeah, I’ve stood, I’ve tried,
And I’d do it all again for every mile of this ride
[Bridge]
Married her in a church with a big red door
Watched her dance ‘cross that hardwood floor
We said “forever” with fire in our eyes
She gave me love, she gave me life
[Verse 10]
Lost my granddad in the fall, it hit me deep
Held my boy for the first time the very next week
Got promoted the same year, bought a little white home
Felt like a king with a hammer and chrome
[Verse 11]
Years flew by, like the wind on the plains
Retired with gray in my beard and a back full of pains
But Lord, I’ve lived, and I’ve loved so wide
Even with the tears I cried
[Final Chorus]
Yeah, life rolls on, and the story’s mine
From cradle laughs to the end of the line
There were roads I feared and nights I prayed
But I wouldn’t change a single day
Now I sit and smile,
Lookin’ back on every mile of this ride
[Outro]
So when my time comes, don’t cry too long
Just play this song and sing along
Tell ‘em I lived, tell ‘em I tried
And I thanked the Lord for every mile of this ride
