[Verse 1]
I was just four, freckles on my face,
When Daddy moved us to that old farm place.
No running water, or bathroom of our own,
Just an outdoor toilet, and no house phone.

[Verse 2]
Atthe age of sevenwe each felt like a king,
With the arrival of that bigwhite ceramic thing.
A Montgomery Ward driver lugged a commode from his truck,
Papa muttered, “A commode with no water, just our luck.”

[Verse 3]
Santa gave me a22 rifle when I was only eight,”
Here’s a box of shells boy, don’t come home late.
Hunting arrowheads with Pam after a fresh rain,
Riding bikes with her down our dusty lane.

[Chorus]

Those days in Ana-coco, I will never let go,
Shooting hoops with Danny in the evening glow.
Racing Russell to the old school water fountain,
While Luther Junior sang out Wolverton Mountain.
Charles looking sporty in our Senior class play.
Me twisting to Chubby Checker on graduation day,
While I lived in the city for sixty years or so,
My roots remain planted deep in Ana-coco.

[Verse 4]

I lostGranny Brown when I was just nine,
Danny paid respects to make sure I was fine.
He found me crying alone outside, it just us two.
He said it’s okay to cry buddy, I am here for you.

[Verse 5]
Growing up in the country, happens so fast,
Pallbearers at 13, our classmate had passed.
Me, Junior, Charles, Russell, LaVon and Dan,
Grief-stricken lads, carrying a casket through sand.

[Verse 6]
Everyone in town lived by one mighty rule,
If you didn’t follow it you were a fool.
Do unto others as you’d have them do unto you,
It was not just golden, it was Ana-coco true.

[Chorus]
Those days in Anacoco, I will never let go,

Shooting hoops with Danny in the evening glow.

Racing Russell to the old school water fountain,

While Luther Junior sang out Wolverton Mountain.

Charles looking sporty in our Senior class play.

Me twisting to Chubby Checker ongraduation day,

Yes, I’ve lived in the city for sixty years or so,

But my roots are planted deep in Ana-coco.

[Verse 7]
My Fox Terrier Rusty running through the field,
Chasing our hound dog Sport was his biggest thrill.
They’d jump a rabbit every now and then,
It was a beautiful thing when they ran like the wind.

[Verse 8]
I caught a Gasper-goo in a dark black slough,
Showed it off in town for hours till it stunk like pew.
Took it home to Mom for dinner, itwas dry as a bone,
Get that stinking fish out of here and leave me alone.”

[Verse 9]
Small for my age I tookteasing in stride,
Straight A’swas my mission with a girl by my side.
Soon it was dating, hugging and kissing,
Thinking oh my Lord, what have I been missing.

[Outro]
Yes, I’ve lived in the city for sixty years or so,

But my roots are planted deep in Ana-coco.
