[Verse 1]
I first saw her car, then I saw the deer,
A flat on her front, another on her rear,
Slumped in her seat crying crocodile tears,
Was the prettiest thing I’d seen in years.
[Verse 2]
I said, “Mam I’m a Deputy, are you okay?”
She shook her head “yes,” but her eyes said “nay,”
Choking back tears came her trembling voice,
“I didn’t see it, I had no choice.”
[Verse 3]
“This is the worst day of my life,
My husband left me for another wife.
We buried my brother in a suit I bought,
When I hit that deer I was lost in thought.
[Chorus]
Perking up people when they are down,
Another job of a lawman in this town,
On days like this when I can help them out,
I score a point in heaven, that’s what I’m talking about!
[Verse 4]
The scars on her boots revealed she was a dancer,
She called her folks, but they didn’t answer.
I called her a wrecker and took her home,
It was clear she was dreading being alone.
[Verse 5]
I never stopped thinking about her that day,
Checked on her twice, making sure she was okay.
When her car was fixed, she drove by the station,
She baked a cake to say thanks and left a carnation.
[Verse 6]
The stem of the flower was wrapped with a ribbon,
Three words written on it said, “You are forgiven.”
I sit there and stared out the window a long bit,
Thinking “Damn boy! Just how dumb can you get.”
[Chorus]
Perking up people when they are down,
Another job of a lawman in this town,
On days like this when I can help them out,
I score a point in heaven, that’s what I’m talking about!
[Verse 7]
This little cowgirl had my attention,
My heart and mind were in another dimension.
What did she mean by the words on the ribbon,
Why did she say I was forgiven?
[Verse 8]
I’d call to ask but that would look dumb,
I decided to ask for the input of some.
On the way to the station I pulled into a diner,
Brought in the carnation to study it finer.
[Verse 9]
The waitress asked if I’d brought her a flower,
Said I’m not sure, give me another hour.
I pondered the words for quite a bit,
She poured a second cup, and I took a sip.
[Chorus]
Perking up people when they are down,
Another job of a lawman in this town,
On days like this when I can help them out,
I score a point in heaven, that’s what I’m talking about!
[Verse 10]
Closer examination found words thin and tall,
They said, “Let’s start slow, give me a call.”
I jumped in my patrol car, flipped on the flashing lights,
Headed to my future and no more lonely nights.
[Verse 11]
She answered the door wearing quite a grin,
I threw off my hat and it landed in the den.
We wrapped up standing there like two coiled snakes,
She said, “Stay for a lifetime and I’ll bake more cakes.”
[Chorus]
Perking up people when they are down,
Another job of a lawman in this town,
On days like this when I can help them out,
I score a point in heaven, that’s what I’m talking about!
[Verse 12]
We got married at the top of a hill,
Under God’s open roof, what a thrill.
As we began to say our vows,
A deer walked up and took three bows.
[Verse 13]
Tears gushed like rain in stormy weather,
Because a deer had brought us together.
We gazed at the deer and blew it a kiss,
Thankful God sent his blessing like this.
[Chorus]
Perking up people when they are down,
Another job of a lawman in this town,
On days like this when I can help them out,
I score a point in heaven, that’s what I’m talking about!
