Julie After School

[Instrumental intro]

[Verse 1]

Tea cup on the table

One plate, one chair

Clock ticks in the hallway

Empty upstairs

Names on the calendar

She traces every date

Phone stays sleeping

So she listens to the gate

[Chorus]

Julie after school

Backpack on the floor

Kicking off her shoes by the old front door

“You miss me today?” “I missed you more”

Julie after school

In her faded blue jeans

Turning quiet rooms into little kid scenes

Running all the errands

Like it’s nothing at all

She makes this small house feel fifty feet tall

[Verse 2]

Milk, bread, and oranges

List on a note

Crinkled in small hands

Zipped in her coat

She checks the mailbox

Reads the names out loud

“Maybe next week”

They laugh like they’re proud

[Chorus]

Julie after school

Backpack on the floor

Kicking off her shoes by the old front door

“You miss me today?” “I missed you more”

Julie after school

On that quiet old street

Two different worlds where the porches meet

Running all the errands

Like it’s nothing at all

She makes this small house feel fifty feet tall

[Bridge – The Day the Door Stayed Closed]

Julie dropping by at fifteen

Leaves along the drive

She knocks but no one answers

For the first time in her life

Curtains never flutter

No footsteps down the hall

Sirens in the distance

White sheets in the fall

They said she went to sleep

Didn’t wake again

Julie held the doorway

Like it might hold her hand

[Verse 3]

Every day at sunset

Flowers by the tombstone

Reading out her homework

So she’s not alone

One afternoon in autumn

A car she’d never seen

A man in a gray suit

Standing on the green

He said, “She left a letter…

And everything she had.”

Her house and 3 million dollars

And a note that read:

[Outro]

Julie after school,

You made my last years full.

Promise you’ll keep knocking

On lonely doors like mine.

Now there’s a new front porch light

On a different street

Little kids with backpacks

Shuffling their feet

Julie after school

Still running down the hall

Making small houses

Feel fifty feet tall
